Can I use a cherry picker without IPAF?

Although an IPAF licence is not a legal requirement to operate machinery in the UK, an employer must ensure staff have completed comprehensive training before operating cherry pickers or other MEWPs. 

This is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.  IPAF training is one of the most commonly recognised proofs of MEWP training. 

Typically, operators complete IPAF 3A training, which covers essential areas like Emergency lowering, Safe operation of platform controls, and rescue procedures.

It’s recommended that refresher training be taken frequently to ensure all operators are kept up to date with the safety standards, regulatory changes, and best practices.

Can anyone hire a cherry picker in the UK?

Yes, anyone can hire a cherry picker in the UK, but the following requirements and considerations should be met and kept in mind.

1. It is a requirement that the hirer be at least 18 years old.
2. Valid identification, such as a driving licence or passport, is required.
3. Public Liability Insurance is strongly recommended, even if you have been using forklifts for some time. We can discuss Public Liability Insurance with you if you wish to hire.
4. Operating a cherry picker requires IPAF training. Speak to a member of our team about IPAF training to ensure you have the requisite qualification to operate a cherry picker.
5. If you do not have experience using cherry pickers, consider hiring a trained operator who can help to support the safe and efficient management of the project.

Is a scissor lift the same as a cherry picker?

Scissor lifts are best for projects where manoeuvrability isn’t a priority. They move straight up and down and are most commonly seen in warehouses, fit-out projects and within general maintenance. 

A cherry picker has an extendable arm that can move up and out, making it ideal for moving over obstacles and allowing for versatile use. They are typically used outdoors and on uneven surfaces, although they may be used internally also.

Are cherry pickers road legal?

Cherry Pickers can be road legal as long as they comply with road traffic regulations. This includes:

• Having a valid driving licence issued for the appropriate category of vehicle in use
• The cherry picker must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and have a valid Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C).
• The vehicle must be insured for use on public roads.
• The cherry picker must be safe to drive on roads with a valid MOT (Ministry of Transport) test certificate if required, depending on the vehicle’s age and type.
• The vehicle should be driven in adherence to speed limits, depending on weight and height.

How much does a cherry picker licence cost?

To qualify for a cherry picker licence, it is essential to complete an IPAF training course. These are typically priced at £170 plus £250 VAT per person for a one-day course. Completing this will authorise you to a powered access licence (PAL) which is valid for 5 years, although refresher training should be considered before that period elapses.

What is the smallest cherry picker you can hire?

Does a cherry picker need an MOT?

A cherry picker may not require an MOT. However, if it is a vehicle-mounted cherry picker being used on public roads, then it will require an MOT, road tax and insurance.

Not all cherry pickers require an MOT, but they do need to pass a LOLER inspection every 6 months, as well as being provision of Work Equipment Regulations 1988 (PUWER) compliant. 

Alongside this, daily pre-checks before use must be documented, and the vehicle must have regular servicing.
