What are cherry pickers used for?

Cherry pickers got their name because the hinged arm resembles the original fruit picking machines. While they can still be used for this specific purpose, more common applications cherry pickers are hired for include building maintenance and repairs, cladding installation, HVAC installation, tree surgery, event staging, lighting and rigging, film and TV production, and facilities management.

Telescopic cherry pickers offer maximum working height and outreach, while articulated cherry pickers are most suited for navigating obstacles and challenging sites.

How high can a cherry picker reach?

Cherry pickers come in several different types, each with different working height capabilities, safe working loads and outreach. Do I need an IPAF license?

Technically, you do not need an IPAF license to operate a boom lift or cherry picker. However, UK health and safety laws require operators to prove they are fully trained and competent to work at height. An IPAF PAL card is the most widely accepted proof of competence and as such, is mandatory on most commercial sites. Mobile boom lifts will require you to complete Category 3b training, while static boom lifts and van mounted platforms will require you to complete Category 1b training.
