What checks are required before using a MEWP?

Before using a MEWP, it is important to perform a thorough, documented visual inspection and functional check. 

These checks include inspecting components for any signs of damage, testing controls, ensuring the ground is stable, and checking for any fluid leaks. A current thorough examination certificate should also be verified before usage.

Do I need a licence to hire a MEWP?

To operate a MEWP, you will need a powered access licence (PAL) card. 

To achieve this, it is essential to complete a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognised course, such as one offered by the International-Powered Access Federation (IPAF). 

In the UK, an employer must ensure staff have completed comprehensive training before operating any MEWP.  This is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
